System Updates Required before July 1, 2020 for All NBME® Web-Based Testing

Posted June 2, 2020

To align with industry best practices, NBME's web-based testing vendor, ITS, will upgrade its Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol from version 1.1 to version 1.2 (or higher) on July 1, 2020.

Some older web browsers and operating systems (OS) are incompatible with version 1.2. This incompatibility will prevent users (whether using computer lab workstations, institutional laptops, or examinee/student-owned personal computers) from connecting to ITS' secure servers to access web-based testing.

Before July 1, 2020, the following users should review these Action Items to ensure they can continue to access or administer NBME web-based exams:

  • Examinees/students who access and sit for NBME web-based exams (like Self-Assessments and Subject Exams)
  • Executive chief proctors and chief proctors who access and administer Subject Exams, IFOM, et cetera.
