NBME Brings Health Profession Organizations Together for Collaborative Approaches in Continuing Certification

Posted January 10, 2019

NBME hosted an invitational conference on Collaborative Approaches in Continuing Certification in December for key collaborators.

"The meeting afforded attendees opportunities for connecting with colleagues, deepening the conversation about continuing certification, and affirming the importance of initial and continuing certification in their professions and for the public they serve," said Lisa Rawding, Senior Vice President of Assessment Programs.

Pat Mastors, founder of Patients' View Partners and NBME Executive Board member, opened the event with a rousing presentation to the group. She challenged attendees to consider how to help patients more readily understand the competence of the medical providers that they are choosing. Using examples from around the globe, Pat highlighted the opportunity for healthcare professionals to take ownership of communicating the value of certification.

The main program included presentations and small group activities designed to explore goals, challenges, and opportunities in continuing certification. Representatives from allied health, physician, and veterinary communities worked together to explore key themes raised during the focus group discussions. For many it was the first opportunity to explore these questions with colleagues from different specialties. "We heard resoundingly positive feedback from participants about how valuable it was to hear the experiences of colleagues across varied professions," said John Phebus, Assessment Officer.

NBME greatly appreciated the opportunity to provide a forum for this important discussion in support of the health professions we serve. To learn more about NBME's services, please contact Amber Williams at awilliams@nbme.org.
